It’s been awhile…


I haven’t posted for a while mainly because I am still not riding.  Into my 8th month of recovery from my motorcycle accident back in October 2015, I am regaining strength and flexibility day by day.  Yet, as hard as I have worked especially since March 21st, 2016-the day I became weight-bearing, I feel I have such a long way to go.

When this all occurred I had no idea despite breaking many bones how hard it would be to regain full function of my leg and body.  The consequences of this accident has many folds.  As a result my diabetes got completely out of control (my AIC went through the roof) and was put on insulin.  Ah, INSULIN.  This would play a huge role in my recovery.  I went through my 20 physio sessions relatively quickly.  Once my benefits ran out I hired a personal trainer  ASAP. 

Hiring a trainer, KEN was the best option I could do to assist me with rehab TEAM EXTREME is a place where they made me feel very comfortable in my own skin, worked with me at my own pace and really appeared to have my health and best interest in hand. I worked my ass off and will continue to do so when I move to Connecticut.  Only 5 days away.  Oh yeah, while in a cast I got a great job working as an Organ Donation Coordinator for Life Choice in Bloomfield, CT.  

Despite how hard I worked, I am having HUGE issues losing the weight I gained while being laid up for 5 months in a full length cast.  I have researched along with my trainer barriers that would interfere with losing my belly fat.  The only thing, well maybe 2 things that came up, insulin and perhaps being 50 now.  It’s so frustrating to be dedicated to HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) only to see my endurance increase, my strength but not lose the weight I need to as well. I have been committed to working out everyday almost 6 days a week since March 21. 

It’s a catch 22…I need to lose weight to get off the increased diabetic medicine I was put on while incapacitated, yet I seem to be hitting a brick wall.  I am eating much better than before the accident, taking vitamins, protein supplements, making sure I eat to recover from a hard work out yet?  Weight stays the same but on a postive inches have been trimmed.

My orthopedist says I could have swelling and pain for a very long time.  As of May 25th I am signed off to return to work.  My only wish would have been over these 8 months that I was riding on long trips versus sitting on my ass and spending all my waking days rehabbing.  Things happen for a reason eh?  I guess I wouldn’t have gotten my new job, in the rare field of work I do.  

My partner and I have been able to get away for a few short trips, I did fly a helicopter for my 50th.

My bike has been sitting with a cover on it for months.  Been on her only 2 times and promised myself the next time I ride I will be able to hold her up if needed. 

It’s only been a week since I have been able to lock my right knee which is a good thing.  Means I am able to hold my own weight.  It’s funny, when I was told this may take 3-5 months I thought that was SOOOO long.  Now?  I continue to ask why when my accident happened didn’t the trauma hospital, Hudson Valley Regional just do surgery versus setting me leg?  The breaks were perfect for a rod.  Oh well, water under the bridge at this point.

My focus will continue to be on my health and move.  June 1st we say good-bye to Long Island after only being back here for a year and hello to Connecticut.

June 8th I start my new job and training.  I have to be honest…I am looking forward to one day having some roots again.  Over the next year of renting, we will look for property to build a house or buy a house.  Can’t imagine renting too long….so much money investing in my landlord versus us.

I hope my next post can be more about exploring New England on board my bike rather than this boring personal crap.  Probation at work lasts 6 months.  Once I am free I will plan some trip.  Anywhere…on my bike…get back to routine and basics of mental health. RIDING!  😉

    Glad to see a picture of you and your partner with smiling faces! You’ve been a trooper through all this and soon you’ll be back in the swing of things. How is your partner’s recovery coming along? Is she getting her own motorcycle for the up and coming adventures or will she be riding pillion with you? Stay strong! Best Wishes…

      My partner Pam had a scratch on her chin lol. She’s been recovered a long time. Not too sure she will ever be my 2 again. She doesn’t ride at all but that’s ok I like solo trips. Just hope she is okay when I get up and riding soling is my happy place

    My PA told me to use the Atkins Diet, so for lunch at work, I buy their frozen meals. Aerostich sells a book titled “Eat Bacon, Don’t Jog” that has a lot of good info (remember, don’t judge a book by its’ cover) and is helping me to lose weight.

  7. Best of luck with the recovery. With regards to losing weight, drop the HIIT and hit the weights. I have found that doing heavy weight made me lose weight and tone rapidly. I have lost more than 11 Kg (24lbs) in 6 months. I have tried HIIT before and did not work on me. Try. You have nothing to lose. 🙂

    Good to see you are moving forward and remaining dedicated. Also Diabetic (non Insulin) however Metphormin, Glipizide, Junuvia, isonapril and Simvastatin have taken their toll on my Abs, LOL Now have an 18 pack of Abs. The belly fat is now with me and even exercising at the “Y” three days a week does little more than hold the Abs to the size they are. Own the scale maybe 20 pounds, seems like I only drop weight when I ride long distance. Maybe another trip to Alaska via Oregon / Washington would help. ( From Florence Ky) Nice to see you and your “Other” and know that you are moving forward with your life. So Sad about the Crash – Hang in there. Best of everything. Jo
