2015 YAMAHA MT-09X

I personally think this would be a HUGE hit in North America if Yamaha made this a reality weighing in about 400 pounds?  I don’t know what do you think?

A new Yamaha adventure-tourer powered by the FZ-09’s triple? Let’s hope it’s a reality!

Yamaha MT-09X adventure bike concept illustration

Regular readers of Cycle World know that we are smitten by the lively 847cc triple in the Yamaha FZ-09 streetfighter. They also know that we thoroughly enjoy the Yamaha Super Tenere ADV bike. Problem is, for many potential customers, the Super T and its 1200cc engine are a bit too big and heavy for some off-road riding situations.

Here’s one possible solution, as seen in the photo-illustration above provided by our friends at Young Machinemagazine in Japan. We’ll call it the MT-09X, and this motorcycle appears to be just what Yamaha needs—an ADV machine that can gobble up lots of miles on the highway while being lighter and easier to handle in the dirt. And while this illustration shows the bike outfitted with tarmac wheels and tires in a more Ducati Multistradavein, who’s to say that Yamaha won’t step up and fit the MT-09 Tenere with DOT knobbies on a proper 18/21 setup? A lot of customers could be covered by a pair of models like this.

What do you think: Would you like to see Yamaha build an MT-09X, or at least a very similar machine? We would. An ADV Yamaha that’s much lighter than the current Super Tenere would make a great addition to the lineup, powered by either the FZ-09’s triple or possibly even the FZ-07’s 689cc parallel twin. We don’t get the XT660 Tenere in the United States, so we strongly suspect that this new Yamaha MT-09X would be a big hit on our soil. Agree?

VANCOUVER Motorcycle Show @ Abbotsford, BC

January 19th, 2013

Cheryl and I rode out to the Vancouver Show Saturday to check out the latest and greatest.  Not that we haven’t been keeping an eye out for all these great bikes but seeing them in person is always a treat.  Riding out to the show we were confronted with our infamous FOG.  Cold out and frosty, this fog makes it almost impossible to see.  At times it freezes on your shield but the real nuisance is how the fog saturates your shield making you wish you actually had a wind shield wiper.

Both Cheryl and I agree riding in this type of FOG is not fun and we would rather be poured on versus this crap. Having said that, there were pockets where the sun broke through and the glare off the wet roads was blinding.  Sun glasses came out, FOG rolled back in and it was like this to the show and back home.  We only live about 40 minutes away from Abbostford but riding in this stuff makes it seem further.  In the end worth it though, we get to park for free and right in front of the entrance.  Anyone driving a cage by the time we got there, around noon had to park FAR away and paid! 😉

Adventure Touring with the KTM 990 and Yamaha Super Ténéré

This is a really good video showing 2 riders who are just regular guys enjoying  a Yamaha Super Tenere and a KTM 990.  Wes is funny about riding the Yamaha off road.  This is really worth watching the entire video….one of the better one’s out there I think because they actually show a dump and accident.  Real stuff.  Enjoy.

Both Yamaha and KTM have dominated the legendary Dakar races for decades. Wes and Grant do their best not to fly off a ridge while taking the KTM 990 Adventure and Yamaha Super Ténéré deep into the Angeles National Forest’s system of fire roads, trails and creeks.
