Clearing the Head

Short photo gallery of an area once again near our house.  East in an area called the Fraser Valley.  Friday is it was cold for us…below freezing with a wicked win chill but ever so sunny.  I often post about my area mainly for those who are not from here.  There is so much to see this time of year if you like the outdoors.  Wild life, snow capped mountains, skiing for those who love to do that…still off road riding in many areas too.  No bike today, too much black ice when I left in the morning.

So, take a look around.  I saw plenty of bald eagles around the Fraser river…many immature ones learning how to survive by the few adults who are now repairing old nests and getting ready for our 2014 eaglet season.  Many eagles down south have all ready laid eggs and have off springs developing into fledglings.  We start later up here.  February and March “N”estorations time and April egg time.

Bald Eagle Haven – all pics can be enlarged

The weekend of November 23-24, 2013, Cheryl and I headed out about an hour east of where we live to get away for the weekend and enjoy the Bald Eagle frenzy that happens every year around here.  Thousands of salmon come to the Chehalis Flats where the Fraser and Harrison Rivers meet to spawn.  It’s also this time of year when the annual Fraser Valley Bald Eagle Festival goes on as well.

Around this time of year into January resident and transient eagles come by for their free buffet of food before their nesting season starts around March.  Most are coming from Alaska after the salmon spawned up there and leave after the big freeze. Tons of food for all species so it is also a special time to see normally non-social raptors gets along with so many young and old.  Continue reading “Bald Eagle Haven – all pics can be enlarged”

BALD EAGLE HEAVEN!

November 24th & 25th 2012 (click on pics for BIGGER high resolution versions)

One thing that I do alone because Cheryl does not share this passion is every year I go out to Harrison Mills, BC to see the almighty Majestic Bald Eagle. I also ride out each year as well.  On Saturday I counted 10 other bikes on the road, today only 1.  Temps started out at 2 C or 34 F and got as high as 7 C or 44 F.  Best time of year to ride, heated liner, gloves, good base gear, BUFF hoodie under my helmet and good socks.  Awesome!

Since joining BC Transplant last January I really enjoy my time away from work.  When we are busy managing cases for work it’s easy to put in 30 hours straight.  The time I get to ride for fun and engage in my hobby like eagle watching is rare while off call.  This was a great weekend!

Bald Eagle Heaven – Harrison Mills, BC

When not out riding my other love, other than my partner and dogs is wildlife.  Bald Eagles especially.  If you have been following this BLOG you will know this about me…Leslie.

Every year between November and early January Bald Eagles show up along the Fraser River in and around Harrison Mills, BC located about an hour East of where we live in Maple Ridge.  The reason thousands of eagles and many other birds like it here is because of the abundant amount of salmon.  The Chelahlis Flats is an important wildlife and fish habitat.  Spawning salmon arrive in the Fall and the Eagles have feast eating the carcass’ of the dead fish.  David Hancock, a Biologist studies this area and has a love and passion for eagles.  I know David and he recently was quoted saying that we might have the largest concentration of eagles in one area in the world.  Even more than Alaska now.  This years count has been over 7,000 eagles.
