National Geographic Photo Contest 2013


Who will win?

National Geographic has once again opened its annual photo contest, with the deadline for submissions coming up on Saturday, November 30. One first-place winner will be chosen from each of the three categories, and the winning photographs will be published in National Geographic magazine. The overall grand-prize winner will be announced in December of 2013. National Geographic was kind enough to let me choose among its entries so far for display here on In Focus. Fox Glance: During a regular trip through the forest, of which my actual intent was landscapes, I encountered this stunning little Red Fox. The moment came as the light broke through the clouds and trees, he turned with a glance of curiosity and gave me the unusual composition I was after. A scene I’ll never be lucky enough to see again in my life, so was over the moon I’d managed to capture the moment. Location: Thetford Forest, England. This was taken in the beautiful Great Smoky Mountains in Cades Cove on Sparks Lane in October 2012. I went to the cove in hopes of a lot of fog, a little disappointed there wasn’t that much. But walking down the lane as the sun came up, the light all photographers dream about showed itself.

The deadline to enter this year’s National Geographic photo contest is coming up — this Friday, November 30. Back in September, the society started gathering and presenting galleries of submissions, encouraging readers to vote for them as well. Winners will be chosen on or around December 15, 2012. National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest 2012


The 24th annual National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest has just wrapped up, and judges will soon be selecting the winners — but voting for the Viewer’s Choice award is open until Friday, July 20, at 9 a.m. National Geographic was kind enough to allow me to share some of these amazing entries with you here, gathered from four categories: Travel Portraits, Outdoor Scenes, Sense of Place, and Spontaneous Moments. Lava Kiss: My husband and I, along with a tour guide and a group of friends, hiked up to what was formerly the Royal Gardens subdivision above Kalapana, Hawaii, where the last standing house was just recently taken over by the active lava flow. While waiting for the rain to pass, we started taking back-lit portraits of each other in front of the lava flow after I set up my camera on the tripod. For the last photo, my husband spontaneously dipped me in a kiss. It was a truly once-in-a-lifetime moment! National Geographic Photo Contest 2011


I have not been riding that much these days for a few reasons, mainly because starting a new job I know when your head is full of too much information and “stress” riding a bike can either be cathartic or just not safe.  I am a head person and when I am feeling overwhelmed in an uncontrollable sort of way I should not ride.  My new job is awesome and I am being challenged in ways I have NEVER been challenged before in my entire career.  Not a bad thing at all just so much to consume working for BC Transplant Society as an Organ Donation Coordinator.  Like anything else I will learn this position and become more comfortable with my new environment and responsibilities. 

So, what does that have to do with this post?  I have learned something new about myself and that is I love photography more than I knew.  Here are 45 pictures that I can not even put words too and again felt the need to share them even on a BLOG about motorcycles.  For those who feel the need to read about bikes only, I apologize.  For those who appreciate art, skill and such diversity in these pictures, please enjoy.
