Started the day out right with Auntie Marilynne and Uncle Fred who served us an awesome breakfast to send us on our way.  Great visit, great food and incredible, gracious hosts. 

Next we were off on the Alaska highway, fueled up in Fort St. John and went through a little town named Taylor where we had to stop and take a picture because Cheryl’s cousin’s name is Taylor.

We came across this sign and weren’t sure we should believe it because we had not really seen ANY wildlife up to this point. We discovered a little farther into our travels on this day that the sign was telling the truth! (Don’t worry, there will be pictures to prove it!)

Another fuel stop, this time at a place called Pink Mountain.

The scenery was absolutely breathtaking and every corner we rounded treated us with a beautiful view.

Entering the Northern Rockies was a sight.  The roads got more bends and twisties to them and the scenery just even got better.

Before we got to the good stuff we stopped in Fort Nelson.  This was where we were supposed to spend the night but Cheryl thought riding to Toad River, another 280 KM would be a better idea.  And….it was, you’ll see.

Roadside treats, yummy! Fort Nelson is very small.  Just a strip and expensive gas.  $1.52 per litre.  We got gas for $1.12 in Alberta!

The Northern Rockies are beautiful for sure and at this pull out is where Leslie found her luggage mount on the pipe side was hanging off.  Somewhere, somehow, the bolts popped out.  Not too much of a surprise.  We only had one night to install the luggage and we were not shocked to see things come loose.  Probably should have done a better inspection in Dawson Creek.

Then Leslie noticed the brackets on her panniers.  We do not have extra bolts with us.  Learned a lesson today but we found some left under my seat.  Go figure.  Cheryl rigged up something to hold us over if not be a keeper and after dismantling the entire luggage system on the side of the road we were back on two wheels with nothing hanging off.

After being delayed for about an hour we headed out once again towards Toad River.  We really had no idea what to expect at Toad River to be honest.

But before we ended for the day we got to see this little guy.

We were wondering where his momma was hiding.  Didn’t stay long to find out.

We went over about 3 or 4 of the metal bridges they have up here.  Interesting to say the least under a motorcycle tires.  Easy on the throttle, relax the grip and it is all good.

We think these were Caribou but who knows for sure.  I am sure someone will comment and let us know. 

We also saw mountain goats, deer, moose, black bear and a goshawk.  Looking forward to see more wildlife and not hitting them.

After our 623 KM day we ended up at Toad River and what a surprise.  We had no idea how cute this place would be and has WIFI, great camp site with a little kitchen and “lodge”.  Nice place for anyone riding out this way.  Only cost $20.16 including tax.  What a bargain in this neck of the woods.

Highly recommended!

Inside the lodge there is a little grocery store, restaurant and gifts.  A bowl of chilli was $10.  We ate out of a bag and had delicious Beef Stroganoff. The ceiling of the  lodge us full of caps!

After we ate diner a storm came flying through.  Never saw it coming and it only lasted a few minutes but the winds and rain came down and then disappeared.  Now it is very cool and dry and of course very light out.

Off to Watson Lake, YT tomorrow.  We have both never been to the YUKON! So, looking forward to it.  So, Day 5 has come to an end and it sure is looking better and better each day.  We can not wait to see the roads we will be riding and what we will be seeing.  Out for now.
